한정부사 only의 도치와 간접의문문을 이용한 문장입니다.

전치사구(by+~ing)입니다.

전치사의 뒤에는 목적어(명사)가 옵니다.

따라서 동사 understand를 동명사의 형태(understanding)로 바꾸어야 합니다.

동명사를 수식하는 부사(fully)는 동명사 앞에 위치합니다.

(왜 그 비극적인 사고가 일어났는지)

→ where the tragic accident happened

(어디서 그 비극적인 사고가 일어났는지)

 

이러면 문장에서 주어, 보어, 목적어 자리에 쓰입니다.

 

Why the tragic accident happened is unclear. (주어)

Our concern is why the tragic accident happened. (보어)

I don't know why the tragic accident happened. (목적어)

이렇게요~

동명사 understanding의 목적어자리에 쓰인 간접의문문입니다.
